Murnau with Rainbow 1909: A Kandinsky Masterpiece of Color and Emotion
Wassily Kandinsky's Murnau with Rainbow (1909) captures a pivotal moment in art history when the artist began his journey toward abstraction. Painted in the Bavarian town of Murnau, this vibrant landscape reflects Kandinsky's fascination with color as a means of expression, foreshadowing his later non-objective works. Now, you can bring this seminal piece into your home with a museum-quality framed poster from Wassily Kandinsky Shop.
Why This Artwork Matters
In Murnau with Rainbow, Kandinsky depicts the view from his house in Murnau, with the Staffelsee lake and the Alps in the background. The rainbow a symbol of hope and transcendence adds a spiritual dimension, hinting at the artist's growing interest in theosophy and the power of color to evoke emotion. This work is a prime example of Expressionism, where bold, non-naturalistic hues and simplified forms convey inner feelings rather than external reality.
Kandinsky's technique here is both spontaneous and deliberate: he applied paint in broad, gestural strokes, allowing colors to clash and harmonize. The result is a dynamic composition that feels alive with energy, inviting the viewer to experience the scene as an emotional landscape rather than a literal one.
